Why do we need to learn this anyway?
In Canada most schools teach a liberal arts education where students think and learn across disciplines. The essence of such an education is not what you study but the result – gaining the ability to think critically and independently and to write, reason, and communicate clearly – the foundation for all professions.
A liberal arts education requires you to learn broadly and deeply across the humanities and arts, the maths and sciences, and the social sciences. We write, report, read, matriculate, experiment, reason, discuss... The objective is to develop in students the broad values, goals, skills, and knowledge they need to pursue inspiring work, to engage in lifetime learning, and to lead successful and meaningful lives. Google recently released the success study it did on its massive employee pool. The keys to building successful teams were not having the smartest most educated individuals but instead focused on emotional safety, equality, generosity, curiosity toward the ideas of your teammates, empathy, and emotional intelligence. They also looked at the top seven characteristics of individual success are: being a good coach; communicating and listening well; possessing insights into others (including others different values and points of view); having empathy toward and being supportive of one’s colleagues; being a good critical thinker and problem solver; and being able to make connections across complex ideas. There you have it - the top STEM company in the world has identified the core learning objectives of a liberal arts education as the keys to it's most successful individuals and teams. |
